Book Discussion
  • Discussion Forum. For today, you were to pull from each chapter a passage, paragraph, sentence, etc. that provoked your thinking and write a short reflection on how it engaged your thinking in general.

New Topic
The BIG QUESTIONS to answer as we learn about each new technology:
  1. What are the "affordances" and "constraints" of the technology? In other words, what does the technology allow us to do or prevent us from doing? The answers to this question might be "messy." This fundamental understanding is important to answer the next questions...
  2. What new skills do we need to teach students?
  3. What will I need to do differently in terms of how I teach in the classroom? How will teaching and learning look different?
  4. How does the technology help me to foster creativity, innovation and some of the other 21st century skills?
  5. What are some ways I can use this technology in my classroom?

From the Syllabus:
Working individually or with a group, you will be asked to develop chapter for a digital textbook in your content area. This project will require you to apply your learning throughout the course to develop something useful to you and others as you enter the teaching profession. The design of this project is flexible and will be assessed based on criteria we develop in class. (We'll develop a rubric in the near future.) You might choose some of the ideas from the link above. You will be expected to think about your work in the class on a weekly basis and capture that in some form. We will discuss more in class and answer any questions you may have. It's not about "checking" off an assignment; it's about creating something meaningful that represents your growth and development over the course of the semester.

In groups of 2-3, choose a technology/tool to investigate for the week. On your blog answer your REFLECTIONS to the question above and be prepared to share your learning about the tool with the rest of the class on TUESDAY. If you've "tried it out," you might want to share your experiences. If you've found new resources, you may want to add them to the wiki pages below.

Each group will work on a tool January 27, February 3, 10, 17 (Thursdays). Groups and individuals will present/share the tools they worked on the following Tuesday - February 1, 8, 15, 22. On February 24, we will have a change of pace looking at other Web 2.0 tools.

For Tuesday, February 1

Post your group/technology tool to the February 1 wiki page. Collaborate with your team mates to learn about the tool for the remainder of tonight's class and over the course of the week. Maintain links, additional information about your technology tool on its wiki page or create another one as needed.

Prepare to share (along with your collaborators - team mates) what you have learned about your technology tool over the past week. This should include at least a personal experience with the tool, but may include some experience teaching the tool to someone else. The sharing period next meeting can be a time for you to share your experience and questions you may have about using it for teaching and learning. We can collectively brainstorm a solution to your questions!

Blog: As outlined above and related to your chosen technology tool for the week, create a new blog post. Please complete this by Sunday evening so we can read them before Tuesday's class. Here is a rubric for blogging. REFLECTION is key. Good writing is important, too. Length is whatever works best for you and the story you want to tell.

Sharing: Post any interesting articles, videos, findings on the Internet, etc for next week to the February 1 page.

Virtual Textbook Chapter: Start with the initial steps as outlined above.

Looking ahead to Thursday, February 3, please prepare the following:

Sharing: Post any interesting articles, videos, findings on the Internet, etc for next week to the February 4 page.

Read: Chapters 3 & 4 in Rethinking Education... post a quote that you find intriguing and an accompanying reflection to the Discussion Forum.

Working on new technology tool and continue the evolution of your digital textbook chapter.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, February 1
